About Me

My main motto, the one I pretty much live by, is "If I'm not having fun, I'm not doing it." Thus, I've married someone who makes me laugh and that overlooks how quirky I am, I have a jolly child, happy dogs, wonderful loyal, loving friends and work I really enjoy. I'm the Editor of the new and improved Rottweiler Quarterly magazine (www.rottweilerquarterly.net) (whom I wrote for some years ago), having a blast doing expert testimony and behavior consultation on dog bites and aggression issues, writing, serving my Rottweiler clubs in a variety of positions and helping with Rottweiler Rescue of Los Angeles (www.rottrescuela.org). I also had a radio show for a year and a half called "The Dog Dish," which was a blast. You can see some of the topics I covered on "Past Shows" page.

I'm sure you have questions. Let me try and answer them.

Q: Who are you, and what are your qualifications in the dog world?

My name is Jill Kessler. I was born and raised in Santa Monica, California. We always had many animals around, from multiple dogs, cats, hamsters to chickens and fish. I rode horses, but not very well, and after many a bump and bruise decided to give it up and go back to college.

In 1987, I got my first Rottweiler, Klaus. He was the first of many. Since that year, I've been an active member of Golden State Rottweiler Club (GSRC). I'm also a member of the United States Rottweiler Club, Medallion Rottweiler Club, American Rottweiler Club and the Associated Rottweiler Fanciers of Northern California. I'm also a member of the United Schutzhund Clubs of America and Anacapa Working Dogs Association, my schutzhund training club. I'm a certified tester for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test, and a temperment tester for the American Temperament Testing Society (www.atts.org). I have been a Board member of many clubs, including a 6 year tenure as the president of GSRC, and 10 years of being our show chair. I also write a pet-column called "Pet-Pourri."

Q: Yeah, but what do you know about dogs in the real world?

I started teaching obedience with Michael Chill of Animal Services in Los Angeles about 1989. That was also the year I started working with Beverly Berger of Actors and Others doing Rottweiler Rescue. We have since formed a not-for-profit group, of which I'm still actively and integrally a part of (www.rottrescuela.org). I wrote for The Rottweiler Quarterly magazine from about 1989 to 1999. While working for Michael, I also worked part time for a veterinarian for several years. Believe me, I learned a lot from all those jobs!

I have owned and co-owned several AKC champions, have titled several AKC obedience dogs and two schutzhund dogs. Training and rescue are where my heart resides. While Rottweilers have been my "breed of choice" for over 20 years now, I love and appreciate all breeds (including mixed), all sizes, and all personalities.

Q: Watcha' got now at home?

I am currently owned by one Rottweiler, Kipper, adopted from Rottweiler Rescue of Los Angeles, and one "what-is-that?" dog, Jetta, from Min Pin Rescue. She may be small, but her temperament is full sized! Ruling the dogs is my son, Jack, now 10.
